Winter on a Driftless trout stream can be quiet, which is why I like to be there. Not many fly fishers are out yet during the week and unfortunately, not many trout are active and willing to take a fly. It’s a great way to spend a day though. Expectations need to be adjusted; the blue wing olive hatch is a few weeks away, and the Upper Mississippi and St Croix’s smallmouth bass are far off in the future.
Soak up the winter sun, it’s getting stronger and the days are growing longer!
Winter on a Driftless trout stream can be quiet, which is why I like to be there. Not many fly fishers are out yet during the week and unfortunately, some days, not many trout are active and willing to take a fly. If you are lucky and the water temperature warms and the wild brown and brook trout feed more on the ubiquitous midges and winter stoneflies, fishing can be excellent. It’s a great way to spend a day!. Expectations need to be adjusted; the blue wing olive hatch is a few weeks away, and the Upper Mississippi and St. Croix rivers smallmouth bass are months away. Enjoy the moment, soak up the winter sun, it’s getting stronger and the days are growing longer!
