Headwaters Fly Fishing Company Stream Reports - Upper Mississippi River

Current Reports for Upper Mississippi River:
Select Year:

8/16/2010 - Mississippi Report

The recent rains have been frustrating but the fish continue to cooperate.

8/8/2010 - Warm weather!

Fishing has been fine with warm nights and days. Some days have been better than others but overall the fish are active. Surface presentations are what we like this time of year. Sometimes we have to go subsurface, this time of year everything works!

7/26/2010 - Upper Mississippi

The river is fishing well, surface fishing is good late in the day and sub surface fishing has been productive during the bright hours of midday.

7/9/2010 - Upper Mississippi is in mid summer form!

The smallmouth bass fishing has really stepped up the last two weeks. The level is slighty high which is good for finding fish but I still like to fish the Mississippi at the lowest water level. Does not seem to bother the fish too much though. Poppers and divers are the preffered method now. If we need to go subsurface flies we do, but we go right back to the topwater presentation as soon as we find fish active on the top.

6/27/2010 - Finally!!!!

We are not even in mid summer yet but the fishing has been good. The flow is up this year relative to years past but that could change as the summer heats up. The fish have been cooperating and the popper fishing has been solid. Bankside lies have been productve but as the water drops look for the fish to move to the midriver haunts. They are already starting to show up there. I will try to keep up with the reports but it is always a challenge as the time on the water increases. That is all for now......Good Luck!

4/23/2010 - LOOKING GOOD!

The high water levels of spring are dropping and it looks like another good year for fly fishing with the potential for low water. I love this type of summer, the fish are typically undisturbed and they will feed right during the middle of the day! LOVE THAT! Give me those rocky, rock bouncing runs all day long and we will catch plenty of fish. Sight fishing, watching the fish chase your fly all that fun stuff. Wade fishing in special areas in the heat of the day is a possibility. Bring it on.

2/13/2010 - Winter along the Mississippi

Yeah winter has a firm grip on us here. The river looks great, open in some spots and running clear as ever. Plenty of snow this year so it could be late June before the smallmouth bass are really active.
